21st CD: Energy policies

By albany layman, Section Diaries

I'm not sure what has gotten into the TU, but they actually had a post on their blog about a policy issue in the primary race for the 21st.  Turns out that the candidates have some policies!  Which you, as a voter, may care to know about!  Who knew.

I can only hope that this does not take away from the TU's coverage of the candidates' advertising.  Those posts about ads that the candidates are running are great.  And it's not like we're going to get bombarded with those ads anyway, so clearly the TU posting stories about those ads is very important.

Before I turn this into too much of a media bashing post, let's get into this issue.  The news peg for the TU post was Tonko's release of an energy plan on August 14, and the TU post described the reactions of the other candidates.

21st CD: Health care policies

Some time ago, I did a post about the health care policies of the Dem candidates for Congress in NY's 21st district.  The slate of candidates has changed since that previous post.  Now that the candidates are presumably set for the primary on September 9, it might be useful to revisit the candidates' policies, according to each one's web site.

As you'll see, the content varies from web site to web site.  Some are very specific, some less so.  Take a look:

Suddaby

Via the TU:

Senate approves Suddaby for seat on federal bench

I can't even guess what this would be mean for the Bruno investigation, or whether this would mean any future action on the Albany PD machine gun case.  Consider me skeptical that whoever replaces Suddaby as US Attorney will be non-partisan.

21st CD: Forum recap

By albany layman, Section Diaries

Blogger and Steck volunteer Soundpolitic attended last week's candidate forum at the Albany Jewish Community Center and reported on it over at The Albany Project.  It's a very good recap.  If you want to hear what the candidates are saying about the issues, check it out.

My question is this - what is the deal with Sullivan?  Seriously - what's the deal?

The Colonie Times Union goes on an adventure

The TU published a feature about ... riding the bus.  Their sub-headline for the article: Times Union staffers discover mass transit has a learning curve.

My sub-headline for the article would be: Some of our staffers are not very bright.

The CDTA web site is here.  Their phone number, as the CDTA people pointed out to the TU, is 482-8822.

A national political convention, brought to you by our corporate sponsors

This post is not about local politics or events, but here is something that just perfectly captures an aspect of our political system.  Check out this welcome bag that attendees of the Democratic National Convention in Denver will receive.

Perfect.  Especially if you have been following the warrantless wiretapping story and the legislative changes to FISA, and the recent vote for immunity for corporations who broke the law.

It won't be too long before this story turns out to be true, I guess.

(Disclaimers, please note, I still think the Democratic party has better policies than the Republicans, I think there are representatives out there who are not complete corporate toadies, etc., etc.  If there is a lesson in this, it's that it is important to have people on the outside of the parties who are harassing them and mocking them to be better representatives.)

Shorter Fred LeBrun:

Joe Bruno.  Slurp, slurp, slurp.  Of course, he was terrible in terms of good government.  So, slurps and curses, all at once.

21st CD: Money and the media

By albany layman, Section Diaries

Question for discussion.  As a citizen, does the amount of money each candidate raised influence how you will vote in an election?  The TU has a story about the candidates' fundraising in the second quarter of this year.  The leading fundraiser got herself mentioned in the sub-headline of the article, and mentions in the first four paragraphs.
