Why We Must Blog

Here in the U.S., we have it easy.
A young blogger arrested in Iran for allegedly insulting supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an Internet posting has died in prison, his attorney said Friday.

Attorney Mohammad Ali Dadkhah said Omid Mir Sayafi, reported to be in his 20s, died in Evin prison, which is located in Tehran and known for its wing holding political prisoners.

Dadkhah told CNN that a fellow inmate called him Wednesday night with the news — and said he believed Sayafi would have lived if he received proper medical care.

Sayafi was first arrested last April, then released for 41 days before being arrested again. He was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for comments on a blog that his lawyer argued was intended only for a few friends to read.
I usually don't drop some bible verse but I'm going to share one of my favorites.
"For everyone to whom much is given, of him shall much be required." -- Luke 12:48
Some blogger got killed in prison. I think we all can step up our game since we live in a country where we are free to blog and do the right thing.

A License To Blog (none / 0) (#1)
by Dan Van Riper on Fri Mar 20, 2009 at 06:37:40 AM EST

right now in Italy, the Italian government is debated a requirement that bloggers must apply for a license before they blog.  It's been on the back burner for a couple of years, but as blogging becomes more prevalent in Italy, the government is reacting in a predictable manner.

The government of Italy, by the way, has been captured by a creature named Berlusconi, a close ally of recently deposed George W.  He owns three of Italy's seven major media networks, and three more are owned by the Italian government. Berlusconi bought Italy the same way that Bloomberg bought NY City.  The only substantial  media criticism this modern Mussolini ever receives is from bloggers, and the billionaire corporate media mogul is moving to shut them down.

Could it happen here?  You bet.  Watch and wait for the proposals to surface.
