"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli
Albany Legislature UpdateBy DIA, Section News
So the other evening the legislature was voting to approve Breslin's latest appointee to the convention center board (yeah, they are still wasting your tax dollars on that). Chris Higgins brought up what was deemed a somewhat radical idea. See, the woman who was being appointed didn't bother to show up in front of the legislature to explain who she was or why she might be qualified. They were being asked to blindly vote on this person. Higgins thought that it might be more appropriate to refer this to a committee and, you know, actually find out what this woman thought about convention centers and such.
That wasn't a very popular position. So the legislature voted to approve this woman sight unseen. After the meeting Frank Commisso reportedly took the opportunity to share his thoughts on this matter with our man Higgins. In front of everyone. And he wasn't using his inside voice. Imagine the audacity of wanting to represent your constituents and actually do your job and learn who it is you are confirming and how they think? No wonder Commisso was so pissed. Legislators are supposed to be seen and not heard, according to big Frank. Kudos to Higgins, once again. We need many more people like him working in our city and county governments.
