Addressing the Vacant Building Issues

An article on how some cities are addressing the issues of vacant buildings. Interesting to note that no one else has decided the best thing to do is put the police chief in charge of the program. I'm not sure anyone has all the answers but at least other people are doing something about their problems.
As a wave of home foreclosures courses through the United States, some of the nation’s hardest hit cities think they have found a way to ease the blight left on their communities by the crisis.

Using taxpayer and private money, Boston, Minneapolis, San Diego and a handful of other places are buying foreclosed properties to refurbish and resell them to developers and homeowners in an effort to prevent troubled neighborhoods from sliding into urban decay.

Actually, the last job held by Bob Duffy the current Mayor of Rochester was Chief of Police of that city.

is welcome to run for mayor.  I think that is a fabulous idea.

My point is, do we really have so little crime in this city that the police chief position is now a part time one and it allows the chief to take on neighborhood revitilization efforts?  Really?

If it takes 2 years (and counting) for the chief to complete an investigation of some machine gun sales can we really afford to have this man in charge of fixing neighborhoods?

The guy can't do the job we are paying him for in a satisfactory manner.  It is silly to ask him to do even more than that.

Imagine how easy it would be to apply all the energy and talent of Albany's people to this problem......if only we didn't have "leaders" standing squarely across the path blocking it.
