This stuff just might work.
Most neighborhoods in Brooklyn have at least one blog — and in some places, there seems to be one in every house, every bedroom — but not many read like BayRidgeTalk.com, where the subjects over the last year or two veered away from apartment sales and plumbing tips and block parties and sounded more like rat-a-tat police reports.

“Fighting and drug deals going down in the driveway of this house,” one person wrote in 2006 about a home steeped in reports of suspicious activity on 93rd Street in Bay Ridge.

Another person replied: “I’ve heard loud fighting for almost a year now but did not realize until recently that it’s a crack house.”

A third, who sounded more like a cynical cop than what he really is, a pet store owner, weighed in: “There have been two deaths in a one-block radius up here. One was definitely an overdose and the other is suspect, but the toxicology is still pending (to my knowledge). If the tox comes back positive, then that could indicate that some bad stuff has hit the streets.”

Months later, the bloggers are celebrating, days after the police raided the two neighboring homes in question, 346 and 348 93rd Street, between Third and Fourth Avenues, and arrested five people, including three brothers who lived there.

Another example of bloggery that works is fixmystreet.com in the UK. Check it out; it could work well in any city on many areas besides fixing streets.

Not to mention the Obama campaign....blogs are becoming very powerful tools. As with most things we'll lag behind in Albany, but I absolutely believe blogs will be key next year in rallying the righteous.

Obama is probably going to find that the blogs will be biting back as his message gets more realistic for the general election.... particularly when the antiwar people find out that the troops aren't "coming home" on January 21.

Obama himself has been pretty vague about what he actually wants to do, and alot of those blanks have been filled in my bloggers.

Bully for the bloggers ... (none / 0) (#4)

I think DIA might be on to something with this blogging business ...

Smaller issue than a crackhouse, but we have an apartment in my neighborhood that is harboring five pit bulls. One small apartment, five big dogs. Someone called the mayor's radio show about it last week.

I always hear that insurance companies will cancel your policy if you allow certain dog breeds that are considered dangerous. So why are there so many pit bulls around in rental housing in Albany? Is there any way to find out who someone's insurance carrier is?

I don't think that's public (none / 0) (#7)

I don't know how to get insurance info, but getting the owner's name and their mortgage holder is a piece of cake. The bank probably won't care about pit bulls but they sure as hell care about the maintenance of the property.

A blog that displayed this sort of info would be very useful. And reporting problems (and creating a record that you have done so), even when you know nothing will be done, is useful.

Different sorts of people (none / 0) (#8)

If the landlord has insurance, it's to cover the loss of the building, and usually doesn't have a liability component. People in business generally have an umbrella liability policy.

The tenants are the ones who would have rental insurance, and most low-rent tenants don't spring for the $80.

When NYC started cracking down on Pit Bulls in the 80's, the black race-baiting crowd cried racism. Owning aggressive dogs may be a nuisiance, but it's also a "black cultural" thing.

starting a blog for Albany about vacant or problem homes.  Google can provide the photos, we can provide the stories.  I think it would be a useful public service.  I don't have the time at this point.

Calling the mayor's show with real issues is pretty pointless.
