A dark force has arisen in Colonie and she has spoken the words that "shall not be spoken". And the true believers are raising their voices of truth and goodness to oppose this evil. We must cast out this Paula Mahan! Behold!
After attending the May 8 Town Board meeting, I was a bit surprised by Democratic Supervisor Paula Mahan's off-the-cuff remarks when she suggested that layoffs in the town may soon be on the horizon as a solution to the town's fiscal problem.

What troubled me even more was the supervisor's lack of sensitivity when she said, "And if that's the case, that's the case."
Oh my God! Stated it like fact. The insensitivity of it all! Her heart must be like a stone under a glacier chewing a piece of Cool Mint Wrigleys. How could she?

Easy. It is a new day in the US economy. Oil passed $130 gallon last night. Tax receipts are down in NY. Consumer confidence is at a historic low in NY. Wall Street is facing historic layoffs and thus the state is facing a big budget deficit. Is this good news? No. But it is the new reality. We all would love for every state city and county worker to never have to worry about their jobs, never have to work that hard other than on election day and occasionally pave our streets or something. Remember when Corning had 70 janitors on staff for city hall alone? Those were different times. They are OVER. Now, you can fight reality and we know you will. But reality has a fiscally conservative bias. And all of you state city and county workers who want the good times to continue have one other big problem on your hands. The rest of us can get fired or layed off anytime. Many of us have. Our jobs don't have pensions. Our health insurance costs us a lot of money. And then we open the paper and read things like this.
The highest-paid pensioner in the state retirement system is a triple dipper. Because of several requests for his expertise, George M. Philip said, he took his retirement a few months earlier than planned last November, netting him a $261,000 annual pension.

He then gave his alma mater some help by stepping into the $280,000-a-year post as the University at Albany's interim president.

And, he said Tuesday, he's being paid $100,000 a year as consultant for his former employer, the New York State Teachers Retirement System, which has yet to fill his role as investment officer. The deal runs through the end of 2008 to help the new pension boss, Thomas Lee.

For Philip, that's three state paychecks worth $641,000 a year.
Here is a hint. Those of us not on the public dole get pretty angry when we read that. You want to talk about someone being insensitive? Might want to get rid of greedy fucks like this because, as far as we are concerned, We the private work force of NY, this bastard is your poster boy.

If you are worried about your job, talk to him.

Side Note: As I've stated before, the current system of health benefits and pensions for public workers is unsustainable. You may want to review this bit of recent news as well.

Welcome to the new reality.

how is it that if you are on social security but make a minimal amount of money by working you don't get your SS check but in NY you can collect your pension while making a quarter million a year?

You missed highlighting the best line in Zeilman's letter:

"It is our job as elected officials to protect the employees of the municipalities that we represent."

Gee, I thought elected officials had other jobs, to represent their constituents, to balance budgets, to try to keep taxes down, to provide essential services, etc.

But it's clear that tax-borrow-and-spend Colonie Republicans like Zeilman have a different top priority -- protecting Republicans in taxpayer-subsidized jobs.
The Democrats are the party of the people.

The whole thing makes me sick. I'm with you, DIA, (none / 0) (#3)

and couldn't have said it better myself.  Enough is enough.  Even if you have healthcare at your job, they still try to avoid paying for necessary procedures.  But the amount of money going to these cronies is unbelievable.
