"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli
There Will Be New BloodBy DIA, Section News
A common refrain on this site is that we need some new people involved in Albany city, county and state politics. Why? Because most of the current ones do nothing but work at self enrichment and preservation. Not all, but safe to say, most. So when someone new comes along the Albany Political Preservation Society take a moment from their selfish ways and focuses their attention on tearing down the new person and letting us all know how dangerous that person will be if they are allowed into an elected office. These people are serious about preservation (I believe they even like to meet at the Fort Orange Club to discuss preservation). This happened to David Soares. Hell, there are some people who try to argue that Michael Brown was a good representative of the people in Albany and that Corey Ellis is bad for the city. And back when Chris Higgins( some no name new comer) ran for the County Leg position, there were all sorts of reasons we were told that he was "dangerous". I won't repeat them here because there is enough stupid in the world. So, what has a dangerous new comer like Higgins done?
How about a gun buyback program? Feeling threatened? How about working to recycle the plastic bags that fill our skies as ghetto kites and hang in our trees like we are some pequeno version of Mexico City? How about challenging the economic farce that is being sold to us about the convention center? And even starting a discussion about the Hotel Tax? Hide the woman and children! If this keeps up he will kill us all!! The critics will say, "big deal, gun buyback programs do nothing. And who cares about some recycling bins. And I like the convention center!! And I don't stay in hotels!". To which I will say, "you may be right (except about the convention center)". However, in a few short months, Chris Higgins has done more in the Albany Legislature than many have done in years there. He certainly has done more to impact my life than the majority of the Albany Common Council. He is DOING something. New blood. It makes a difference. We're going to need some more to give people like Higgins, and the citizens of Albany, a fighting chance.
