"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli
One Less Thing I Need to DiscussBy DIA, Section News
This blog is based on a few simple ideas. People pay a lot of taxes which in turn pay the salaries of our elected officials and all of our city, county and state employees. They work for us. As with any employees who work for me I expect them to be honest and accountable. I also expect them to acknowledge reality and be fiscally conservative. For a few years now I've been saying the convention center in Albany is a bad idea because Albany's city budget is not sustainable and the con center will make that problem worse. Well, when the governor starts sounded more worried than me, I guess I can put that idea to rest. The city of Albany is in serious financial trouble starting next year ($9 million in the red to start) and it will get really bad in 2011 when our PILOT payments decrease by $7 million a year.
I was right about John Sweeney. I was right about the financial situation in this city. Time will show that I also was right about the one other issue that I write about. Mayor Jennings, his various police chiefs and the majority of the common council have serious integrity issues, are bankrupting this city, and letting certain city employees act as if there are no laws. Too bad I've been right so often. This city is going to be some mess to clean up. New York state faces a "terrible plight" -- an unprecedented $20 billion in budget gaps over the next three years, Gov. David Paterson warned Wednesday...he said the state is on a "cliff," watching revenues fall.NOTE: If you are a city, county or state worker and you think that pension and sweet health benefits are always going to be there, I think you may want to start paying closer attention.
