I don't think there has been an official announcement, but it's pretty clear that Tonko is now in the race for the 21st CD.  That brings it up to eight Dems and two Repubs.

I don't really get how a guy who just announced can get so many votes from the Albany County Democratic review committee.

The review committee, in secret voting Saturday, gave Steck 10 votes, Tonko 9 votes and Brooks 2, party committee members said.

Four other candidates interviewed received no votes. They were Darius Shahinfar, former staffer for U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand; Lester Freeman, Albany city employee; Arthur Welser, real estate agent; and New York Pharmacists Society Executive Director Craig Burridge. Attorney John Aretakis did not interview, Bosworth said.

Then again, I won't be voting based on what the committee says, so I guess I would give this a resounding "so what."

Because They want to back a winner this time... (none / 0) (#1)

Since they have backed so many losers lately, it looks like they are weak..(and we know the albany County dems are weak, especially when the candidates they are backing are losers.  they made a big mistake not picking a candidate in the DA's race)

If there are so many candidates from Albany County in the race Tonko wins by default.  the albany county vote will be split between all the albany county candidates and Tonko is very popular in his district and in Albany as well.

I would like to see Tonko win.  He is honest, hard working, and a good representative.  I attended the HEAP hearings a few years back that he chaired and he was concerned about the people in NY who could not pay their bills.

he listens and he is well respected.

Tonko Still Not Official, Steck Leading the Pack (none / 0) (#2)

Although you wouldn't know that if you kept to the Times Union and channels 6, 10, or 13.

Today's TU website reports the first time Tonko has confirmed he is "planning a run" but is "still working on paperwork to file with the FEC."

While Tonko is indeed a respectable man, it seems to me that his time has come and gone.  Not just for his political career in general, but in this primary in particular.  Phil Steck opened his campaign headquarters yesterday, attended by another former Assemblyman, Bob Reilly.  You also wouldn't know that if you only got news from the TU and WRedBlueGreen.  Lucky for us, we have public radio and and independent newspaper called Metroland to give voters the whole story.
