Mass is expanding the drug war, any thoughts on how to stop

I know this is a bill in Mass, but being the fact that Albany is a political town, I wanted to see if anyone could provide insight. After growing up in Albany, I am very much against the war on Drugs after seeing countless casulties on my cities streets. I used to wonder was it all worth it, how many people have to die and how many peoples lives have to be ruined. On the other end of the debate, I wonder why is it that drugs marketed by Pizer and booze demand respect when they are as destructive if not more.

In mass, leaders are looking to make three natural herbs, Salvia, Kratom and Koth illegal. As of now, there are no known side effects, no ods, and no indication that there is even a problem. Kratom is an interesting plant because it has been used by researchers in other countries as a way to help people kick harder dangerous drugs like heroin. Also, many researchers have pointed out health benefits of Salvia.

With this being said, it seems like Mass would be causing more harm then good with the passage of this bill. First, it would increase the drug war which is such a lost battle in the first place. We would create a blackmarket making the drugs more popular, more potent, and more expensive. This would mean more people would be induced into using them and we would see gangs use them to make money. Also, if these plants do have health benefits, why ban them before we have studied them. Why ban something that could potentially be the cure to things like depression and drug addiction.

Anyways, I want peoples thoughts. Does this bill stand a chance, its already passed the house committee and is in the rules and scheduling committee. I am really against the drug war, how can I do my part to defeat this?

I think that you will discover that the groups behind the expansion of this are the pharm companies.  They are also trying to get the FDA to regulate and eliminate much of the natural herbs and homeopathic products so that we all get hooked on their products.

I don't agree with making hard drugs illegal. Can you imagin what the drug problem would be like when Pfizer and Bristol Myers are able to leagally make and market crack and and heroin?

Good God.

You think it stands a shot of being passed in Mass. It was introduced in the house by Republicans, where as we only have 19 here. It got past the committee and is in steering right now. A similar bill went through Albany in 2005 but failed.

You know the game. It doesnt matter if it passes in Mass or not.

It will be introduced in as many states as possible to raise "awareness" and then Congress or the FDA will act.  Same federalization BS that has wrecked the country.

I onced worked for a former State House Republican minority leader when I worked on the North Shore.   If he told me the sun was coming up in the morning I wouldnt believe him. If the sun came up I would look for a spotlight.

Once he got out of government all his buddies would steer state contracts to him and his family owned business.

But police forces have quotas (I don't care if they say they don't - they do) and the city makes money off the little guys, over and over again, while the big stuff continues to be protected.  It's disgusting. How about that surgeon that got busted on Howard Johnson, saying the guy "jumped" in his car.  They never prosecute cops, politicians, doctors, lawyers, to the full extent of the law that the poor little guys are at the mercy of.
