Play ball?: 21st CD

Almost enough people to field a baseball team.  There are now eight Dems announced for the 21st Congressional seat.

The executive director of the Pharmacist Society of the State of New York said he is entering the crowded race for the 21st Congressional District seat of Rep. Michael McNulty, D-Green Island.

Craig M. Burridge, 52, of Waterford, becomes the eighth Democrat to announce.

And as hawkny pointed out, we have almost as many as we need for a game of Hollywood Squares.  Who's next?

Its a pretty meaningless race (none / 0) (#1)

Nobody is putting real money behind this race because New York is going to lose a congressional seat when the census is completed, and the schmoe with the least amount of seniority will be the one kicked out.

So we'll have some no-name, one-term congressman for two years... it's basically a vanity position.

Gillibrand is essentially the de facto congressman for the reason.

That sucks (none / 0) (#2)

Why would Albany lose its seat, its one of the few areas in New York gaining population. I for one would figure western NY should lose one since they are pretty much Ohio in my opinion.

Pretty safe bet (none / 0) (#3)

that it will be any remaining republican seats that go away come redistricting in 2012.

2 election cycles from now.

Not necessarily (none / 0) (#4)

Just as the republicans gerrymandered the 20th district, the democrats will be doing the same. thing. Since the party is investing millions into Gillibrand, they'll be shoring up her district.

If this was a desireable seat, there would be a real candidate instead of the parade of people nobody's heard of running on the same "Iraq sucks" platform.

If Democrats control the Senate (none / 0) (#5)
by ProgressiveDem on Sun Apr 20, 2008 at 06:25:03 AM EST
and a Democrat is Governor in 2011-12, every Democratic seat will be safe.  If they need to keep a republican seat, that district will have a 70% Republican enrollment advantage and it will look like an octopus.

If we have a Republican Senate or Governor, the lobbying will be furious.  Either way, they will look for retirees first.  Every congressperson has a base that the State party doesn't want to piss off.

Being a freshman congressman from a safe district isn't much fun.  You have no pull with your party and the only people below you are new Republicans from safe districts.

As for Gillibrand, she's valuable because she's a Republican killer.  You don't take a great shortstop and put him in right field.  You get Gillibrand a 51% Dem district and put her to work.

We have real candidates (none / 0) (#6)

just because they aren't high profile names does not mean they aren't solid Democrats with very real abilities.

It is time for a new generation of leadership. I strongly suggest that everyone get to know each of the candidates in the 21st district. I think you'll find that several have very good qualities. I am confident that you will find that one in particular has all the qualities necessary to make a strong Congressman to represent this are for years to come.

Peace,

Andrew
