Words to Describe the Convention Center

I found some words of inspiration from the New York Times, that could very well be the future of the Albany County Convention Center from the initial reviews of the Albany Knickerbocker (Snickerbocker... Pepsi... Times Union?) Arena.

The controversy over the arena's esthetics is in keeping with the project's long and disputatious history. For years after the arena was proposed, Albany politicians argued about its size and location. When these issues were finally settled, they argued some more over what the arena should be called. They finally had to resort to a phone-in poll to resolve the matter.

Another source of controversy is the arena's $65 million price tag. Albany is suffering serious budget problems, and many residents blame the arena.

But all this grousing has not dampened the spirits of the arena's chief supporter, James J. Coyne, who has been the Albany County Executive for the last 14 years.

''The events here are going to put Albany on a national map, even on an international map,'' he said.

How some Albany residents aptly described the completed Knickerbocker Arena:

A recent survey by The Albany Times-Union found residents universally unimpressed by the arena, a white metal-sided structure wedged next to an exit ramp off Interstate 787.

They compared it to a refrigerator, a toaster and a metal box.

''It looks like an oil tank,'' said Wayne Schermerhorn, the chef at Bella Napoli, an Italian restaurant across Beaver Street from the arena.

''It's an ugly monstrosity,'' said Dolores Pratt, a waitress at the restaurant.

''It looks like a flimsy piece of junk,'' said the Assembly Speaker, Mel Miller.

Our future can often been predicted from out past. It's call delusions of grandeur.

The best way to describe the planned Albany Convention Center?
A flimsy piece of junk
An ugly monstrosity
An oil tank
A refrigerator
A toaster
A metal box
It's not yet built. We will have good adjectives to describe it when done.

I admit the Arena is an eyesore, but what else would bring people to Albany. I used to work as a financial analyst and made some friends who study entertainment markets. I was surprised to find out that Albany's arena is one of the top venues for concert sales. I also heard of allot of people from Upper Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties coming to Albany for events rather then NYC due to the fact that its easier to get into Albany and cheaper. Still, I don't support a convention center because its a waste of space. Albany needs to bring people into the cities to live and work and that area downtown is a prime piece of real estate. If they ever build that damn bullet train and/or extend Metro North, you will need the land.

But Is Albany Better Off Because of the Pespi? (none / 0) (#2)

How much night life has the Pespi brought since it was constructed? Is downtown Albany all that much more bustling at night, beyond the short section of South Pearl by the arena, as people run from their cars, hoping to avoid the muggers, to the arena?

Is Albany better off because we have the Knickerpesitimeunionwhatever Arena? Yes. Absolutely.  It may be a loss leader but it is something that is usefull when selling the city to outsiders.

The arena is used often and it is great being able to see national ranked entertainment.

Jim Coyne was a visionary.

The convention center is another animal. We needed the arena because there was nothing within 100 miles. We dont need a convention center.

CBA League (none / 0) (#4)

Jim Coyne is not a visionary, look at the CBA. I am all for minor league sports as an alternative to the overpriced yuppified sports world of today. Problem is, I think Coyne isn't utilizing the market around in well for his league. Look at the AHL, its a perfect casestudy of a minor league that actually does better then the Proffesional teams in some respects. They have teams in every city in the northeast (Albany, Providence, Sprinfield, Manchester, etc). Same goes for minor league baseball. These sports markets are doing well because they capitalized on the fact that northeasterners support their local teams. He has put the CBA in places where sports aren't big or have competition with larger teams.

I for one think the CBA could be a succesful minor league team if he worked to have teams in every northeastern city like Lowell, Manchester, Poughkipsee, Long Island, Providence. I give the CBA one more year before it folds. I will give him credit on the Armory. I think that place could make a ton of money as a concert venue.

I dont think Coyne had anything to do with the placement of the CBA teams. He was out of the scene for several years and I think he had an unpleasant suprise on how far the league and the market had slid when he reorganized the Patroons.

Minor league sports are a crap shoot. The fan base has a short attention span.  Albany-Colonie Yankees, Albany Diamond Dogs, Watertown Pirates. Syracuse Eagles (AHL). All gone.

Right, I forgot Isiah Thomas ran the league to the ground. Its kind of like what Patterson is inheriting from Spitzer, a mess.
