Tuffey IS responsible...

when he started as chief he was given the responsibility to manage his force. Everyone on this blog seems to agree that Bonanni is a disgrace who should have been dealt with; they disagree with the "how" and "who had the ultimate responsibility". As the top manager Tuffey could have and should have dealt with this long ago.

Tuffey said no to cameras in the interrogation rooms and blocked putting cameras in the police cars. Anyone know how many cars have cameras today? The first time you catch a bad egg like Bonanni on camera you have all the proof you need to fire, and no arbitrator, union, or manager can dispute the facts. When you ignore the problems they grow and fester ie- Bonanni and the gun scandal as two examples. Continued poor management by Tuffey, continued use of words like "not accountable" in describing him. Isn't it time, folks, for a leader whose words match his actions? http://www.democracyinalbany.com/story/2008/2/19/22630/5126

The video cameras were turned down during his tenure, the most recent December of 2007.

If Bonanni had been arrested and sent to the hospital for a blood alcohol test he could have been fired when he showed up to work drunk.

If he had been we wouldn't now be wasting our words on this repugnant character.

So much for Tuffey's 'Zero Tolerance'.

Perhaps it's time for a show of force by the populace paying his salary, his legal fees and the court's award to his victim.

Everyone who wants to see this guy fired should show up at a common council meeting and demand his dismissal and accountability from their police chief.

You mean the same City Council (none / 0) (#5)

that is allowing Tuffey to run his own internal investigation of the gun-buying scandal ignoring the conflict of interest. The same council that approved the money to put video cameras in patrol cars. I agree with your thought Jim, I just wonder about the lack of power and ability to come to resolution on issues. I wish the council would get some guts and stop backing down when Tuffey turns bully. I have not seen a meeting date/agenda posted for a public safety committee meeting to address their outstanding issues with Tuffey. I've sent an email requesting this; no response yet.

As I said before Pickel should, at the least, be demoted over this. If he is a supervisor and shows this poor of judgement then he has no reason to be in his position.

Hard to have a zero tolerance policy when those you depend on to enforce it instead fight it.

That's the cover story (none / 0) (#7)

I suspect the "incorrectly administered" breathalyzer was merely a cover story to make the issue go away. No sense in going after the fall guy.

That would be a good start (none / 0) (#8)

Indeed, that would be a very good start. How about this Monday? Should we all bring pitchforks and torches?

Tom, I cannot advise you to bring anything... (none / 0) (#9)

but your voice. The mere suggestion of something as dangerous as pitchforks and torches could buy you a one-way ticket to some unknown destination for interrogation in this day and age.

Seriously though, someone, a lot of someones, need to shake up this council and get them to begin fulfilling their sworn obligation to serve their constituants honorably and faithfully.

I HAVE written to the council (none / 0) (#10)

about this and have received responses; I encourage everyone else to do the same. The email addresses are listed on the council website.
