Update on the 21st

So, I guess the race for the 21st has begun. And after considering all the candidates and all the issues, we've got a McNulty endorsing a Clinton staffer, Tracey Brooks. I love the regal certainty that this endorsement conveys.
"I believe that Tracey is the only candidate, both announced or in the wings, that has a real grasp of the commitment, duties and obligations involved with this office." -Mayor Ellen McNulty Ryan
Ok, she doesn't mention the issues at all. But she is quite sure that Brooks is the only person who actually understands what it takes to work in congress. Great.

Meanwhile, Phil Steck is co-sponsoring some legislation over at the Albany County Legislature today.
Steck Pushing for Anti-Iraq War Resolution

“Albany County Legislature Expected to Consider Reso at February 11 Meeting”

Albany, NY (February 10, 2008) – Albany County Legislator Phil Steck, who announced his candidacy for Congress in New York’s 21st CD, announced today that he is pushing hard for support of the Resolution he co-sponsored with Legislator Doug Bullock that states that the Albany County Legislature is officially opposed to the Iraq War. The resolution is expected to be considered at the Monday, February 11 meeting.

Steck said that he fully supports the effort to bring attention to the Bush Administration’s failure in Iraq. “It is important for local elected bodies, like the Legislature, to officially act and state our complete opposition to the Iraq War,” said Steck, a Democrat who represents a portion of the Town of Colonie. “We need to immediately withdraw troops from Iraq.”

Steck said that the resolution would send a message that local elective bodies have a clear and strong opposition to the Bush Administration’s policies in Iraq.

When: Monday, February 11, 2008, 6:00pm

Where: Albany County Courthouse, 2nd Floor, Eagle Street

This comes four years after Bush's invasion of Iraq. Where has the county legislature been on this matter until now?

And here I thought the McNulty's (none / 0) (#2)
by ProgressiveDem on Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 05:40:27 AM EST
had become more progressive. I guess that only applies to Mike.

Tracey was a Republican before she was an Independence member and she only became a "Dem" after Clinton, her boss, became Senator. Is that the strong leadership the Democratic Party needs to take on the Republicans?

Brooks will vote in whatever way she feels is most advantagous.  Which is how we got into the Iraq mess in the first place.  Which is why there are tens of millions of uninsured.  Which is why the mortage market was allowed to balloon and explode.

Steck is a principled progressive who works his ass off.  He understands the legislative process and just as he found a way to do the impossible in Colonie, he will find his way into leadership in Congress.

It's amazing the Phil would choose such an advantageous time to co-sponsor this "no brainer" resolution.  Where has he been since the begining?
He doesn't have a chance in the race for Congress.  I'm not a fan of Tracey Brooks, either.  I would like to see Brian Stratton eneter the race and then we will have a decent Candidate.
But think about it, first the McNulty's are throwing their support to Brooks.  I'm quite sure that Jerry, who is joined at the hip with Hillary, will also support Tracey.  One thing is for damn sure, he will NOT support Steck.
Hold on, it's gonna be a rocky ride!

So Steck proposes anti-war legislation. Woooo, very impressive.  NOT!

Is this what we should expect from Congressman Steck, feel good but worthless statements?

He wasn't in the Legislature until this year.  Steck supported it.  I support it.  So do most Americans.

They are cute and cuddly. Most people agree. Shall we introduce legislation proclaiming that?

Times Useless (none / 0) (#5)
by Soundpolitic on Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 10:16:35 AM EST
The Times Union Local Politics Bog does a terrible job of informing Democratic voters as to who's in and who's out.  Nowhere do they mention Phillip Steck's name in their report.

Nor did they approve my comments pointing out that he is the only other announced candidate in the running.

The truth, the whole truth...or anything BUT the truth?

Regardless of how you feel about either announced candidate or the scores of speculative candidates, the Times Union owes us all a duty to provide comprehensive coverage.  It should not be on the shoulders of bloggers to inform people of who is running...not when the TU is the largest paper in the district.

The Times Union does not owe us anything. Don't like how they cover the race then dont buy their paper.

Every newspaper owes its readers full, comprehensive coverage.  Newspapers are how voters get their information, and thus they are how voters make an informed choice.

If voters are unable to make an informed choice, then our democracy suffers.

"I'd rather have newspapers without democracy than democracy without newspapers."  --Thomas Jefferson.

And for the record, I don't buy their paper.  Believe it or not, I can't afford it.  But I do check their website.

Contrary to what you may believe, Alf, I am not thinking of myself when I post this kind of thing;  I'm thinking about the good of the people in the 21st Congressional District.

Hillary's main cheese in Albany (none / 0) (#10)
by Corruptany on Mon Feb 11, 2008 at 03:44:03 PM EST
I wonder if its set up this way in order to make way for the King himself. I know that Schdy and Colonie residents fear Jennings since he will devote all of his efforts to his city and crony's. At least McNulty was from outside of Albany's limits. The way I see it is that Jerry can't win unless some unknowns are the front runners.

All of a sudden people from Schdy and Colonie will be begging for a better equiped and stronger candidate (Jennings isn't him, but he can pretend to be one, hes a master spinner). Then comes Jennings, the King and Hillary's main cheese (cheese is orange to) in Albany. We all know Hillary will steal the Democratic nomination, and Jennings will make the case that he will bring in more money to the district due to his clout with the Clintons and his powerbase in Albany. This is just a theory, I am probably wrong. I just have a feeling Jennings will run for this. Tracey Brooks is an oportunits with little name exposure besides an unsuccesful Assembly run. To make matters worse, she lives in Coeymans.

Nothing against people from down there, I just think voters in the urban part of the district would want someone with knowledge and power in the major cities. Jennings as a Congressman, thats one of the horseman of the Apocalypse. I am sure people outside of New York would confuse him for Joey Butafucco.

just his cronies.  All you have to do is look at the spreading wasteland in Albany to see that Jerry doesn't care about much besides assembling properties for his buddies' development schemes.

More important matters to deal with. (none / 0) (#11)

As a community, we should come out and demand that our politicians pass resolutions condemning one of the most deadly substances known to man -- a substance that local governments all over the 21st Congressional District SELLs to an unknowing public!

What is this poision? Dihydrogen monoxide.

From one of the websites on the forefront of this important issue:

Dihydrogen Monoxide (DHMO) is a colorless and odorless chemical compound, also referred to by some as Dihydrogen Oxide, Hydrogen Hydroxide, Hydronium Hydroxide, or simply Hydric acid. Its basis is the highly reactive hydroxyl radical, a species shown to mutate DNA, denature proteins, disrupt cell membranes, and chemically alter critical neurotransmitters. The atomic components of DHMO are found in a number of caustic, explosive and poisonous compounds such as Sulfuric Acid, Nitroglycerine and Ethyl Alcohol.

Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment. Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:

    * Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
    * Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
    * Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
    * DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
    * Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
    * Contributes to soil erosion.
    * Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
    * Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
    * Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
    * Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
    * Given to vicious dogs involved in recent deadly attacks.
    * Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere, and in hurricanes including deadly storms in Florida, New Orleans and other areas of the southeastern U.S.
    * Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.

This is a substance used to operate nuclear reactors, often a component of homemade bombs, and is pesticide production. And this silent killer is likely to be lurking in your basement.

We must demand that all county legislatures, the state legislature and the US Congress act to condemn the distribution and sale of this deadly chemical.

You got to love the Democrats.  They couldn't even pass their own anti-war resolution.  As soon as they got a litte resistance, they folded like a cheap suit.  This is the same reason that the next President will be a Republican.  The Democrats keep on showing us how spineless they are!
