Gun, Knife, Pencil, Car Violence Task Force

The mayor and the common council will be soon getting together to talk about gun violence in Albany. How about we spend some time talking about this? At some point this week i will post my thoughts on what I think should be looking at in regards to this. What do you think? If you post your ideas, it might help the task force, and if they are good i will probably take credit for them. We've got a really serious problem. So, what do you think is causing it and what can we do about it?

Data (none / 0) (#1)

I understand from 17th person information that people arrested for gun law violation are either 1.  not convicted  or 2.  Plea bargained to a slap on the wrist.  I would like to see hard data.

I really believe, as I've mentioned on previous posts, threatening deadly force during the commission of a crime is a huge line to cross and must be dealt with severely.  Carrying an unlicensed concealed weapon should result in sentences measured in years.

I would like to see data from the last, let's say 10 years and going forward, that takes arrests for use of or possession of a firearm and breaks down in the following (juveniles included):

  1.  Were they plea bargained, yes or no
  2.  Were they convicted, yes or no
  3.  How long were they sentenced for
  4.  How long were they actually in jail for
  5.  Have they been arrested for illegal gun possession/use in the past and if so goto 1-4  (kind of sounds like programming in BASIC)

DIA- I am in one of my cynical moods this evening.

I think the task force should be made up of community activists who hate the Mayor and the police cheif and want to use the task force as a pulpit to beat the City of Albany up without really caring if they solve the problems or not.

Does cynical mean it's after 10:30 and you've thrown a couple back?  I'm thinking back to prior postings where it's dangerous to drink and type and there are certain hours this may happen?

I am less cynical after I have "thrown back" a few.

Today has been one of those days when I have had the pleasure of dealing with nothing but idiots.

I spent most of the afternoon dealing with a problem caused by a contractor in Flori-DAH who didn't do what he has already billed my company for. I am not even making any money on this deal.

Todays conversation:

Client: Why havent you talked to XXXX??"
Me: I have left several voice mails and emails and havent gotten a call back."
Client: I just talked to him, why havent you talked to him.
Me: I just called him and got his voice mail
Client: Well call him again. I just talked to him.  I wish I have never had you get in the middle of this.
Me: Your wish is granted.
Client: What the hell do you mean by that?
Me: I wish I had never agreed to help you with this and you can handle it on your own. You will remember that you got me involved because of all the problems you were having with your other contractor. You think you can do better then fine. This makes my life a hell of a lot easier.
Client: Wait, I didnt mean that.
Me: Then what the hell did you mean? Tell you what, I am going to make some follow up calls to the people he was supposed to work with, if he didn't talk to them I am going to fly down in the morning and take care of the problem personally.
Client: And what will you do.
Me: Punch him in the head.
Client: You wouldn't.
Me: To fix this and shut you up you are damn right I would. There is a flight out at 8:25 and I will have this fixed by the close of business.
Client: Let me call you back. I am sure that won't be necessary.

Another "Task Force". What happened to all the others?

...I am interested in knowing who is going to actually do all the work, provide all the data, get the information, organize the forums?

If the police provide data that do not conform to what the task force believes is the problem, do they have other sources of data upon which to rely?

I am not cynical about the task force, I've just am used to the common council making law without figuring out how it's going to be implemented.

Squirtgun Violence Task Force (none / 0) (#7)
by Roscoe on Wed Sep 26, 2007 at 03:51:35 AM EST
If the Violence Task Force can see beyond the current political correctness of limiting the citizen's right to bear arms, which is doubtful in this lazy and 'liberal' little burg, it would eventually find that violent crime diminishes where concealed carry is appropriately permitted, since the threat of deadly force in response to criminal activity keeps the thugs in line.  That's why cops carry guns in the USA. Concealed carry has been severely limited in the Capital region for decades, by misguided jurists chosen through a broken political process. The Squirtgun Violence Task Force might most productively turn it's collected attention to an examination of concealed carry rules locally, as the only viable short term means of curbing violence in the region, while the community as a whole sorts out the consequences of decades of stupid (and failed) social welfare policies. The latter will take a long while to rectify.

Got any data to back that up?
