"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli
Cindy Sheehan steps downBy kateb, Section Diaries
Cindy Sheehan announced her "resignation" as a leader in the anti-war movement on Memorial Day. Amy Goodman of Democracy Now interviewed her. Some of Cindy Sheehan's reflections can be found here.
This portion of Ms. Sheehan's letter seems especially relevant right now: "When I started to hold the Democratic Party to the same standards I held the Republican Party, support for my cause started to erode and the 'left' started labeling me with the same slurs the right used. I guess no one paid attention to me when I said that the issue of peace and people dying for no reason is not a matter of 'left or right,' but 'right and wrong.'" One of my hopes is that we can exercise our civic duties without being beholden to any political party or captive to any political equation, but do things simply because we believe it is right.
