"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli

Remember when Mayor Jennings' didn't get his funding for the convention center IMMEDIATELY when he wanted and he threatened to blow up the Legislature? It's that sort of maturity that really serves us well here in Albany. Thinking things through, saying the right thing. Remember earlier this week when he said the Spitzer adminstration only cares about "down south" and how its really hard to get things done in the capital these days and basically burned any bridges we had with the Governor and Lt. Governor? Another reasoned and rational response that was putting the needs of the citizens of Albany first. You can't argue with his Honor's consistency. And his outrage was justified because nothing helps the people of the South End and West Hill like a "celebration". 1,000 vacant buildings, half your minority kids dropping out of highschool, 25% of Albany living in poverty....yeah...let's make sure to throw a big party for Dr. King to celebrate our success. Maybe sign some sort of Community Benefits Agreement at the party to celebrate the Convention Center and how we are committed to... how did George Levielle put it this week? "Leveille assured them it would and said the convention center authority is "committed to including those who do not usually get included in these projects.". Yes. Yes. That should fix things. Anyway, the party is still on. And all those things Jennings' said about the Governor apparently were incorrect. They still won't be fixing the neighborhoods but they will be throwing a bigger party then ever.
Albany Mayor Jerry Jennings, who initially said a smaller King Day festival would be a "slap in the face," to Albany, said he was pleased by the news.It is that sort of mature reasoned leadership that will serve us so well in the years ahead. Mayor for Life, indeed.
