"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli
Convention Center LettersBy DIA, Section News
So, the day after we had the convention center seminar the Times Union is already printing Letters to the Editor. Nice turn time. Look at how this one starts out with the traditional bashing of Albany's downtown.
What's left is a small downtown, which is isolated, largely empty at night, and with little to attract people who live there, let alone visitors to a convention centerYou know, I live in downtown Albany and I'd have to agree with the letter writer. Oh...wait a second...the letter writer was describing Hartford and was not describing Albany. This was his take on Albany. Albany retains housing and commercial stock both in and around its downtown, which has given it something to build from in its struggle to regain relevance.Yeah. Anyway, take a look at the Hartford Convention Center and some photos of Hartford and see if it looks like a ghetto wasteland compared to Albany's Downtown. Or maybe take a look at this map. Doesn't look anything like Albany, does it? Or take a look at this photo. That doesn't look anything like Albany, does it? Probably easier to mistake that for some place in Egypt than another small northeastern river city.
