Lebrun on the Albany Terrorism Case

Mr. Lebrun and I may occasionally disagree on the politics of the city of Albany, but I commend him for speaking out about the Albany Terrorism Sting case like he has, because its not a popular position with some and he easily could say nothing. Well done, Lebrun.
This case should never have seen a courtroom. Because once the mesmerizing ingredients were brought into a trial -- the convoluted and selective translations, a glib informant avoiding 15 years in jail and the exploitation of our fears and anxieties over global terrorism by prosecutors, -- the results were predictable. The trial had remarkably little to do with Aref and Hossain. This was not our federal court system's finest hour, or the FBI's, either.

From the beginning, the feds knew better. Up front, the Justice Department in Washington admitted that this case was not all that strong or the defendants all that dangerous. But the FBI put a lot of resources and a lot of money, time and ego into a complicated sting that took months and months and leaps of faith to swallow. So the feds wanted a couple of scalps for all their efforts. They got them.

Amen to that.  What's sad is the beating he will take from the readers for stating what is to me the obvious.

I think (none / 0) (#2)

most people will agree with him.  Letters to the editor usually come from the complainers, of course.

Here is a question Kate.

If someone came to you and said that they were selling missles to terrorists to be used to assasinate people and cause terror and then showed you missle parts as proof of their ability what would you do?

Borrow money from them?

Somehow I think that even you Kate would call your friends at the FBI and tell them whats going on.  Wouldnt you?

Oh, so the fact that they were being fooled by a criminal means something.

Lets see, so following your reasoning it isnt the fact that they thought they were getting their money from a guy selling anti-aircraft missles and that they had been told that these missles were going to be used in a high profile terrorist attack.

Its because the guy was lying about really being a terrorist that matters.

then what does it matter (none / 0) (#8)

if the guy claiming to be supplying the missles is facing 15 years.

It doesnt. They thought they were getting money from a guy who was selling antiaircraft missles and who had told at least one of them that there was going to be an assination attempt in New York City.

Screw them.

I wonder what Pericac's next line was after... (none / 0) (#7)
by Jim Travers on Fri Jan 12, 2007 at 11:24:54 AM EST
he's quoted saying:

"It's not just these guys, it's what happens tomorrow when a guy is somewhere and overhears someone talking about an attack," Pericak said. "We want that person to call the FBI. If they call the FBI because they're a good citizen that's great, but if they call the FBI because they think this is a sting and they might get caught up in it, that's OK, too."

I bet it went something like this:

'No need for you to worry, we'll get it all sorted out in Guanatanamo'
