"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli
Mayor Jennings - the cost of incompetenceBy DIA, Section News
13 years ago Mayor Jennings decided we needed a new landfill in albany. So he agreed to buy some land in Coeymans to solve the problem. $5,000,000 in tax dollars for the land. However, there have been some legal issues around the land. Things happen. Perhaps a better mayor would've forseen these issues but we'll never know. Now we find out that a big chunk of the land is also protected Wetlands. Without a doubt a better mayor would've forseen that issue. So we've been spending a lot of time and tax dollars trying to figure out how to expand the current landfill. There have been some lawsuits there. Supposedly the city has been suppressing information about toxins leaking from the landfill. So, there are lawsuits about the old landfill and lawsuits about the new landfill. Here's what the bills have looked like according to today's Times
The various obstacles and problems surrounding the dump has resulted in a lot of legal work for Nixon Peabody, according to a list of invoices paid by the city since 2001. In the first year of the contract, the firm billed $141,000. That increased to $150,000 in 2002 and $397,000 in 2003.$1.77 million. Another small part of the cost of incompetence. But don't worry, Mayor Jennings has a solution. He is going to raise your taxes a whole lot next year. Enjoy your reassessment.
