More letters to the editor. Leon Dukes on diversity:
The mayor is clearly showing his blatant disrespect and disregard for individuals from communities of color. He must be stopped. I, too, wait to hear from black elected officials and from the diverse community at large. But in the absence of any response from these groups, I will take the helm and lead the charge to hold meetings at the grass-roots level to work for change in the city administration. Please join me.
Ford McLain on Renaissance:
If Mayor Jerry Jennings' new Re-Capitalize Albany committee was established with the sole purpose of leveraging private sector capital in partnership with public sector initiatives, then it is a good initial step in what should be a broader, more expansive initiative.

True renaissance in Albany starts from within the city and within the hearts, minds and souls of each of its citizens, civic organizations and small businesses.

Neighborhood associations, merchant associations and neighborhood watch groups -- as well as enclaves of nonaligned individuals -- need to be engaged in any broader initiative. The members of the local PTA and parents of children in parochial, private and charter schools need to be engaged, and yes there needs to be more racial, economic and political diversity in any Albany renaissance.
So far we haven't seen any letters from rich white suburban bankers supporting the mayor, have we? I guess no one wants to go to bat for the mayor on this one? This is a tough one to spin. Maybe, at least, Betty Barnette can tell us why we are wrong. We'll see.

George Wallace (none / 0) (#1)

Concerning Leon Duke's comments.  It is disturbing to me when I hear comments like this that are probably to a large extent correct.  I have always felt that when you get a large group of people with similar ideas, color, race, sexual orientation, and religion together there is a problem.  They always find another group to pick on.  We are all Americans.  Everyone must be treated equally and we are not.  I would temper the comment by saying that there is a majority of black (sorry - age thing) students in the city of Albany, are not receiving the best education available.  Additionally the City is divided by wealth into neighborhoods.  Although I think this is poor, it can be used to the advantage of the City to revitalize Albany.  As I have said before, if I was the Mayor, I would move my WASP body to Arbor hill.  There are some very nice properties there and affordable.  Turning the City around even for the best and brightest is a monumental task.  Every resident must be involved in some way.  No one must be excluded.  Maybe it takes a planned march on Jennings office to get his attention.  He is not exactly George Wallace, but...

...for posting the letter.

The key thing is that renaissance IS happening in Albany, slower in some places, faster in others.

One of the first tasks of the mayor's group is to assess where this is happening and go in and ask a simple question: "how can we help?"

The police are obviously involved in Neighborhood Watch (August 1 is the National Night Out); various neighborhoods have a combination of business associations, neighborhood groups and neighborhood watches.  Crime and the perception of criminal or uncivil behavior is always going to the be first issue on people's minds: the key psychologica barrier being, why should I live here or shop here or walk on these streets, if they are not safe.  So that needs to be addressed.

So, now it's Game on!

The mayor's radio show should be interesting tomorrow. Assuming this issue comes up, a smart politician would acknowledge the valid criticisms, admit that he was wrong, and announce some kind of remedy.

It would be true folly if he sticks to his guns and repeats what he said last week.

you can see what Joe Rabito thinks over at the Albany PTA blog.  He has posted a comment that would seem to indicate that its full steam ahead with the current plan.
