"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli
Soares - Public Support of the Citizen KindBy DIA, Section News
Well, lots of news about the DA in the Times Union today. Interesting to note that they failed to mention that an effort to have a vote of no confidence by the Albany County Legislature was withdrawn. Why was it withdrawn? Who knows? Perhaps it was the packed room at the meeting showing their support for Soares? Perhaps it was the press conference earlier in the day where Shelly Silver stood by Soares' side (you remember Shelly...he's the Democrat that Mayor Jerry Jennings doesn't talk to when he wants money for Albany...interesting that). Perhaps it was that Mayor Jennings, Christian Mesley or Chief Tuffey didn't bother to show up to explain their position on the matter. An effort to undermine Soares was shut down. However, that doesn't stop Fred Lebrun from making some completely unsubstantiated statements in his column and also completely ignoring all of the political history of Albany in one fell swoop.
"Thou shalt not be cocky" is a golden rule of political survival, and David Soares is taking a mighty risk with the aggressive posture he's taken. The public doesn't go for this.Right, Fred. Soares is breaking that golden rule of politics. There certainly has never been a cocky politician in Albany. Those poor Albanians must be shellshocked. Also, taking an "aggressive posture", which is also known as "having a spine and standing up for what you believe in" and what you promised the voters you would do, while it might be rare, I don't think its proven to be a "mighty risk". Hopefully no politicians will hire you as their campaign consultant. (Remember when that brash young politician Eliot Spitzer took aggressive stances? Whatever happened to him?) It is interesting to note that the only area politician that did take a stand yesterday was common council president Shawn Morris. She reportedly spoke in favor of the DA and rational conversation. Here's a letter to the editor today about what the public does go for: I applaud District Attorney David Soares for standing up for what is right. Once again he has taken a principled position to protect the integrity of his office and our community. What? I thought the public didn't go in for this "standing up for what is right" stuff? Right, Fred?
