"It must be remembered that there is nothing more difficult to plan, more doubtful of success, nor more dangerous to manage, than the creation of a new system. For the initiator has the enmity of all who would profit by the preservation of the old institutions and merely lukewarm defenders in those who would gain by the new ones." Machiavelli

Why is it ok for the president of the police union to threaten the only newspaper in town and there doesn't appear to be any uproar from anyone? Do you know why its a problem? Here's my idea why that is a problem. Let's look at the situation. A police officer crashed his car while on duty. He had a BAC of 0.03 when this happened. He had been on duty for 3 hours and still had a BAC of 0.03. That means he reported to work with a BAC of at least 0.09. And if he quit drinking at 8PM like everyone claims that means he had a BAC of around 0.19 when he quit. Or...he didn't spend the hours BEFORE reporting to work drinking at a bar but while on duty he had at least 2 drinks. NONE of the possible options are good options. And the Times Union has printed FACTS. No one is disputing them. They just don't like them. And the police are once again covering up for exceptionally reckless behavior that is an ongoing problem in the department.
Remember the last cop to crash his car while drunk? Remember when the president of the police union said that he shouldn't lose his license despite refusing a breathalyzer because he wasn't read his miranda rights...by police officers. And then the story was that he was dizzy from chewing tobacco which caused him to crash. And remember when the officers involved thankfully stood their ground and the president of the union had to back down? Or do you remember when a police officer was so drunk he crashed his car into a residential building, with people inside, and burned it down with all of their possession going up in the fire...and Mayor Jennings said that the media should leave him alone because he was "a good kid". Well, that good kid made a really bad mistake. As did Officer Wilcox. Good people make bad decisions. Really good people don't cover up the truth just because it isn't a pretty picture. But the Mayor and the powers that be in this town apparently want to cover up once again for an officer who was drinking and driving. And now the Times Union appears to be going along with the plan. Today they are running a storyabout the NAACP demanding an apology because of their accurate reporting (not sure how this is "advancing" anything). Am I the only one who sees this as outrageous. You know why i'm outraged? Because the next fucking apology is going to be like the one when the cops shot an innocent kid on the corner of lark and state. Its going to be the Mayor and the police chief apologizing that an innocent person was killed due to a drunk driver, who just happened to also be an officer in the APD. Its only a matter of time. Because in this town, with this adminstration, drunk driving is something to be "left alone", because a BAC of 0.03 while on the job means you aren't "legally intoxicated" so what is the big deal? Because this repeated pattern is bringing only one repeated response. Cover it up. If the Times Union's initial reporting wasn't true, why is it that we haven't heard reports from the bartender disproving it? Anyone else wonder why we haven't heard from the bartender? Or any of the other people in the bar? Or were they also threatened by the police chief union president? The bar owner gave $2,500 to Mayor Jennings re-election campaign last year...don't expect to hear anything from him. Do you remember where the officer who crashed his car into the building and burned it down was coming from? You know, the party where he got blind fucking drunk and then was allowed to get in his car and drive away? A retirement party for his dad, who was a long time albany police officer. Let's play a game. Pretend you were really drunk and crashed your car into a building and burned it down. And let's pretend you were 17 years old and that was your dad's car that you crashed. Then, let's think about what your dad, a responsible adult, would do in this situation? Would he leave you alone and call you a good kid? Or would, perhaps, there be some sort of response to address the situation. Its interesting how whenever i play this game, the answers that I get from the local powers that be are very different from the theoretical "responsible adult" response. But back to the game that is really being played. Let's not address this issue. Let's pretend it never happened. Shame on the TU for reporting the truth. Heads back in the sand everyone. Aren't the tulips lovely?
