Betty Barnette - Collects Paycheck....not much else

Check out CBS 6 News tonight at 11. They will be reporting on the $4.5 million in uncollected parking fines that we have here in the city of Albany. When you add that to the $8 million or so that the city hasn't collected from the water authority, you get a pretty big number. Seems like the only thing we can count on the Treasurer to collect is her paycheck. Throw in the money that they were stealing at DGS and we might actually balance a budget in this city.

Betty and Jerry have had 14 years to do their jobs. And this is the best they have to offer. I think its time we give someone else a chance.

Who?

1,500 workers? (none / 0) (#2)

The Times Union says that the City of Albany has 1,500 people people on its payroll.

Screw the parking tickets, how about getting rid of some of these people???????

Syracuse has a population of 147,000 (or about 50,000 more than Albany) and has 300 more employees than Albany does. Or one city employee per 113 residents.

Buffalo has a population of 292,648 and has 2,587 on its payroll. Or one city employee per 81.6 residents.

Albany 64.6 city employees per resident.

Maybe some of the Common Council members should start looking at WHERE these 1,500 employees live. Albany? Right. We vote for these guys, the city employees vote in Delmar, Colonie and East Greenbush.

64 city employees per resident? That would be some trick even in an old machine town ...

I thought Barnette bragged in her last campaign about how ticket collections were up. A certain percentage must be uncollectable (out-of-towners, former residents, etc.) but $4.5 million in unpaid tickets. Every once in a while, parking enforcement comes through my neighborhood and boots a bunch of cars. But it's very seldom. Funny thing, when the boot goes on, the checkbook comes out ...

1,500 not including school/ library (none / 0) (#4)

From Times Union:

For the last two years, the city has been working to settle the 12 union contracts that cover about 1,000 unionized workers, who represent about two-thirds of the city's total work force.

Which means that there are 1,500 workers.

Albany's population 96,000 (+-)

96,000/ 1,500= 64 per person.

Way too many people on the public tit when you consider that doesnt include Albany County, Albany School District.

And just how many of these people LIVE in the City of Albany?

Thats because they are trolling in my neighborhood. About once a week they come through- usually at night which means they are going after residents and not state workers.

I love math problems:

I'm not sure about the exact numbers, how long a period for not collecting, but let's do some quick fun and assume a years time

I recently was sent a collection letter from the city, my 20 parking ticket was now 65.00 fair enough

$4,500,000.00 / $65.00 = 69,230.79.......

69000 tickets is

69,230 / 265 days (weekends and holidays no tickets) = 261 tickets a day

I know that the PSO's ticket all cars, police, fire, feds, offical cars, ect.  For instance all the cars that parked in the fed building parking lot have been in the streets for months while the garage is being worked on.  All/many of those cars around there are feds vehicles.  All ticketed and I'm sure not paid.  City tickets county sheriff marked cars and unmarked cars

I wonder if they count all tickets given out and not keep track of who gets off free.

Well at least we know the PSO's are doing their job so we can't say all city employees are no good

Mr. A, I think you mean 64 residents per each employee

96000 / 1500 = 64, 64 residents per each employ

292648 / 2587 = 113, 113 residents per each employ

You are correct, sorry, while posting it I was trying to find- without luck- the number of full time school employees and was getting frustrated.

A phone call to AS district HR office, lady on other end said around 900 or so

I think I remember reading that 30 or more make more than 100,000.00

So (none / 0) (#9)

At a minimum there is 2400 people that we are paying for

Now we are down to 1 employee per 40 residents.

And most of them don't LIVE or VOTE in Albany.

I wonder why our taxes are so high?

City Employees (none / 0) (#10)

+/- 1,500 employees.  47% reside outside the city.  Some even reside outside the county.  However, in the city's policies and personnel practices manual, it states that "Albany residents will have preference for all vacancies that occur in city government". This practice has been totally ignored.  Most are not civil service classified employees, as residence within the testing district is a prerequisite for taking permenancy exams.  The city ignores violations of state laws governing the length of time "temporary" help can be employed. The maximum of 9 months of continuous employment applies across the board for temporary help.  Some city temps have been on the payroll for many years.  Decades in some cases. Most department heads hire their friends, or their friends' friends, etc..
