Some good bits in the Metroland (where they obviously think tampering with elections is actually worth reporting on...how novel)

Metroland letter (none / 0) (#1)
by alfrednewman on Fri Nov 11, 2005 at 05:47:10 AM EST
You know, while I usually think Metroland runs only letters from self centered cry babys who see everything as a race issue I do applaud them for running this letter.

the Editor:

In her review of Angelo's Prime 677 [Food, Nov. 3], the reviewer wrote "For dinner, my husband had the prime New York strip ($39), which comes from the most tender section of beef. Sides come a la carte ($4 to $8). . . . The steak, however, was the main event, and it was well worth the money."

C'mon--what can you do to a piece of meat that makes it worth 40 bucks a serving, without so much as a couple of broccoli florets? Prices like this are outrageous! This is like the Emperor's New Restaurant, where people stand in line to pay exorbitant prices in order to be seen as the type of person who thinks that a 40-dollar slab of meat is "well worth the money."

I simply can't imagin paying 40.00 for meat unless it came from an endangered animal or maybe one of those Sacred Cows in India.  A real sacred cow, one with a God inside- like a cracker (jamie- snicker) jacks prize. If you really want a good meal that is reasonably prices go to Alda's on Lark.  Now that is some good eating.  And, despite no one at Historic Albany likes her, she hates the Mayor!

I think you mean Elda... (none / 0) (#2)

And she's a scam artist.

That letter about angelo's is pretty funny. And I think "40-dollar Slab of Meat" would make a great name for a restaurant.

Elda is a total scam artist...her "hotel" in Troy finally got shut down after years of providing substandard housing. I worked in Troy year's ago (early '90's) and she always had tons of code violations. All she wanted to do was make money. She pulls out the "I'm from Italy, I don't speak much Englis" when it suits her needs. Her food is mediocre at best.

For what its worth, she did a good job with Lemmies Market and the archery place on Lark Street.

I used to drink at one of her bars in Troy, used to love the two price policy. Underage? COme on in, the cover she collected would more than enough to cover the fines.

And I like her food and always had good service there.

Elda and St. Joseph's (none / 0) (#6)

Her brief, and nearly ruinous, ownership of St. Joseph's Church is ample reason to vilify and shun Elda.

Empty, but ... (none / 0) (#8)
by 1894 on Mon Nov 14, 2005 at 04:31:29 AM EST

Empty, but better off than in the hands of a greedy clan that did not have the money, the technical expertise, or the vision to provide a proper re-use for one of Albany's great architectural landmarks. Elda claimed that the church would be used for wedding receptions and banquets, but her son's website at the time said it would be a "decadent" nightclub. Neighbors told Elda to take a hike, and the city took back the church by eminent domain after an engineer (who was hired by Elda) said the building was in imminent danger of collapse.

Historic Albany Foundation is the current owner, and the building has been stabilized with the help of a $300,000 state matching grant. More than $100,000 has been raised locally from private donations. How about skipping a meal or drinks at Elda's and making a donation to HAF?

Whine with diner (none / 0) (#9)
by alfrednewman on Mon Nov 14, 2005 at 05:05:00 AM EST
Im a member of the HAF. I also seem to remember that they came very close to going under a few years ago because they got into real estate projects which they didn't, and still do not, have the expertise to carry out.

St Joes is a gem.  No question.  But it was designed as a church and churches do not adapt themselves to anything easily.

I suspect that HAF will be forced to spend a hell of a lot more than they have so far to keep the building stable.  My question is now what are they going to do with it?

Good steak (none / 0) (#3)
by Citizen McLain on Fri Nov 11, 2005 at 07:54:34 AM EST
Good point Al.

Elda's does have a nice steak, for less than $20.

If you want a really great steak and you are in NYC, go to Keen's Chop House on West 36th.  That's a good steak and does not even cost $40.00.  Throw in a couple drinks and a side or two, you can do it for less than $100 for two people...in NYC.

That's what I should have had Tuesday night: a much needed steak and manhattan!
