Good one, governor
If [McCain is] the answer, then the question must be ridiculous.

Urban Revitalization

By DIA, Section News

Article on Buffalo's efforts to remake itself. Worth the read.

Albany needs leaders who are thinking about the future, not trying to anchor albany to the past with broken business models and failed urban redevelopment schemes like Convention Centers.

Addressing the Vacant Building Issues

By DIA, Section News
Posted on Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 01:48:51 PM EST

An article on how some cities are addressing the issues of vacant buildings. Interesting to note that no one else has decided the best thing to do is put the police chief in charge of the program. I'm not sure anyone has all the answers but at least other people are doing something about their problems.
As a wave of home foreclosures courses through the United States, some of the nation’s hardest hit cities think they have found a way to ease the blight left on their communities by the crisis.

Using taxpayer and private money, Boston, Minneapolis, San Diego and a handful of other places are buying foreclosed properties to refurbish and resell them to developers and homeowners in an effort to prevent troubled neighborhoods from sliding into urban decay.

21st CD Wrap Up

By DIA, Section News

A comprehensive overview of the last week or so of the race in the 21.

Update [2008-8-25 4:45:12 by DIA]: And a review of last night's debates by the "professionals" that does not even compare to the work of SoundPolitic and Albany Layman. I don't think there is any doubt that if you want to be an informed voter, traditional media isn't going to help you. Pretty much all they are good for is running your ads, which they will be happy to do.

Convention Centers

By DIA, Section News

Wasn't PriceWaterHouseCoopers, etc supposed to deliver a report on the viability of the convention center by "the end of June"?

Perhaps, when shopping for people to deliver $50,000 reports that can be copied from a local blog, one should think twice before picking PWC, etc. Just a thought.

What game do you think they favor at the downtown HQ of the Albany Convention Authority? I'm guessing poker. Or various drinking games. Your tax dollars at work. I do have one recommendation for a way to save tax payers some money. When they close that farce down, auction off the nice sign they have. I predict there will be a high bid from an anonymous bidder.

We should not forget which politicians advocated so strongly for this boondoggle.

Oversight in Albany

By DIA, Section News

While this whole effort is really toothless, it is a start. Richard Conti introduced a new law that, if approved, would give the common council the ability to vote on issues like midyear raises. Currently the mayor can basically just do things willy nilly with zero input from anyone. Which is why we are facing a budget crisis. He isn't good at this stuff. Nor, I presume, is the full time "Budget Director" who we pay big money to each year. Personally I think the Budget Director should be looking for a new job as the direction we've received has resulted us being in a big financial hole. But I leave that up to big Jerry, since he is the "Manager".
STATEMENT FROM MAYOR JENNINGS

Mayor Jennings Comments on Local Law C-2007

Albany, NY – After careful review, Mayor Jennings has chosen to take no action on Local Law C-2007, which amends section 603(D) of the City of Albany Charter in relation to the authority of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment to transfer budgeted funds related to salary rates or salary totals.

Mayor Jennings stated: “As Manager of the City of Albany, I do not agree with the provisions of this legislation. However, I feel that it is important for the electorate to have the opportunity to decide on the merits of this proposal, and therefore, I have decided not to veto this legislation and will defer to their judgment.”
Now, at this point you are probably saying, "what the hell is this about?". Based on some informal polling of my fellow citizens I've found the awareness of this law and issue is somewhere below 1%. This is the Times Union's coverage of the issue:
Will the Albany Common Council become stronger? A proposed local law could give them more power in how Albany’s money is spent after the approve it’s annual budget.

The proposed law would require council approval of any departmental reorganizations or any midyear raises for individual employees.
Small change, as they say. But it will give us a chance to all vote on this idea in November. Which should be a good indication of how capable people feel Jerry "The Manager" Jennings is at balancing our collective check book. I'm betting he won't like the results seeing that we are facing a financial disaster within a year of his giving us all a "responsible budget".

Richard Conti deserves some credit for bringing up this idea. However, as the crisis is already here, some would call this "too little too late". We're still $15 million in the hole for next year and $20 million the following. I don't think there is going to be much of an issue of anyone getting raises. I'll even offer up a re-election slogan for Jerry. He can make a claim that he won't take a raise until the budget is balanced. "The only thing raising around here will be your taxes. - Jennings 2009".

What are the odds?

So I see a story about one of the "lawmakers" from Buffalo has been outed for banging some interns. I think to myself, "No kidding. Never believe a married man who gets drunk with some interns on Lark Street and then spends the night in one of the girl's bedrooms and claims he just slept on the floor". My bad.

The current married Assemblyman from Buffalo caught up in a scandal for cheating on his wife is Sam Hoyt (D). I had him confused with the "i slept on the floor" guy who is an Assemblyman from the Buffalo region.
An upstate assemblyman was removed from his post as ranking member of the Assembly Committee on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse on Thursday after revelations that he slept at the home of a 21-year-old female intern last month after a night of heavy drinking.

The assemblyman, Mike Cole, a Republican who represents parts of Niagara and Erie Counties, also received a rare letter of censure from his colleagues, citing his violation of a policy banning lawmakers from fraternizing with interns. Mr. Cole will also be stripped of his seniority and prohibited from taking part in the Assembly’s intern program in the future.
They are bipartisan men up around Buffalo. They share the interns. The "willingness to cross the aisle" jokes have all practically written themselves. And research has shown they are all much funnier when you are getting drunk in Albany with some English Major from Siena while the wife is home in Buffalo raising the kids.

On a side note, I'm considering a way to reduce binge drinking among our elected officials. John Sweeney was in charge of some anti-DWI program at one point. We all know how that worked out (didn't he also have a young woman on his lap when arrested for DWI?). I fully expect Mr. Sweeney to use the Bob Ney defense in his impending trial ("I was too drunk to know I was being bribed"). And Cole was running a program on drug and alcohol abuse. Methinks these programs encourage "field work" and should all be eliminated.

For those who don't remember Mr. Ney's trangressions.
Rep. Robert W. Ney (R-Ohio) is expected to plead guilty in the coming days to charges stemming from his association with convicted lobbyist Jack Abramoff, and he will blame a long-standing problem with alcohol for behavior that spiraled down to illegality, sources close to the congressman said last night

"Almost" - The Evolution of a Lie

Chief Tuffey on in March 2008
"I don't know how many guns were purchased. ... I don't know. There's no records, guys."
Chief Tuffey's position in August 2008
Tuffey said the department destroyed 42 of the machine guns last year. In an interview last week, he said confirming the total number of guns has been difficult because the department had almost "no records" related to the purchases.
Gives one great confidence in our top law enforcement officer, doesn't it?
